Not My University

The African-American struggle for both inclusiveness and representation at the University of Illinois has a long-running background, dating back prior to the start of Project 500—a public demand to admit more Africimg_5771an-American and Latino students into the university.

An inspirational video Project 500 Then and Now, created by other UIUC students, explicitly shows in what ways this is true.

But the dance of balancing African-American inclusiveness as well as the autonomy of having strength in numbers is a delicate one that requires a combination of administrative savvy and a grassroots-styled persuasion of people of color. As one of the  Black bodies in a predominantly White institution, one cannot help but wonder what exactly the University of Illinois means when it heralds, “Inclusion” as if students are impersonalized assorted flavors of some politically correct cocktail.

Mental Health Matters

This photo represents the translucent haze that anti-depressant drugs can leave.

As a group, we chose to use an alternate host for our website to create a final project more unified with our topic and theme of Mental Health Awareness. The site we used, which can be found here, allowed more room for creativity, which we used to design a stress-free space to present our information. The animated GIF on the homepage has been scientifically proven to help calm anxiety, which allows the reader to access our information in a calm state of mind. This was important to us because, as our title states, #MentalHealthMatters.

Voices from the Field

On an off the field, student athletes serve as role models. Athletes, as public figures, have a platform that can be used to publicly voice opinions.  Historically, athletes have been using this platform to stand up for social issues. One of the most historic athlete protests took place at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics when two runners held up a “black power” fist. Since then, athletes have been taking a stand.

Recently, football player Colin Kaepernick took a kneel during the national anthem at a game. He kneeled in solidarity of the country’s racial injustice. His protest has lead many more teams and athletes to do the same.

When student athletes are brought into the public light, the question is posted, are athletes role models? We focused on the voices of student athletes and coaches to determine their views on this matter. You can view our website here.

Walking into the Shadows:

There is a lot going on in the world today – take a look at our newsfeeds alone. We read, we update and we try to understand, but have you ever tried to put yourself in someone else’s shoes? We are going to shine light on what’s hidden. Reporter for Off The Shelf and Online, Lizzie Jassin, takes us through what it’s like to experience what other minority groups go through on campus or throughout the world. Follow along with Jassin as she walks through The Tunnel of Oppression , which was hosted at The University of Illinois. Reporter, Jasmine Dinh, shows us the other types of discrimination held universally and how other university campuses display their versions of The Tunnel of Oppression. Dinh also shows us what changes one goes through as the progression of Alzheimer’s takes over. But what is there to be said about the in between of living with Alzheimer’s? Reporter, Jazmine Reynolds, introduces us to the techniques involved with caring for one with Dementia and Alzheimer’s and just how the caregivers are the biggest supporters of our loved ones. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can take an emotional and physical toll on someone. But the toll of living with Alzheimer’s can be worse. Reporter, Vennetta Sims, gives us a step by step tutorial on how to deal with the depression associated with Alzheimer’s. When facing issues, it’s easy to feel in the dark and unsure of the outcome, but we’re here to Shine Light on What’s Hidden. We’re facing the unknown and finding the solutions.  Continue reading

With over 44,000 Undergraduate students, everyone finds a community where they fit in on the University of Illinois campus. But from segregation in the Greek system, to students speaking out of their experiences with microaggressions in the community, race sadly still plays a factor. Our team of Kara Garvey, Camille Avilez, Fangyi Liu, and Jimmie Jackson took a look at race relations at the University of Illinois.

All Things Bikes

Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 9.42.33 PMWith bike lanes on almost every street around campus, it’s evident that biking is a very important mode of transportation for students and faculty on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. With so many bike laws, violations, and organizations around campus,  the four of us, Alexis Casati, Emma Pool, Megan Vasiliadis, and Sam Welch decided to take a look at some of the bigger issues surrounding bicycles and other ways they can be used other than for transportation. We explore frustrations with biking on campus, exercising with cycling, and the different types of bikes that can be found at any bike locking station around campus. Check out the website we created for All Things Bikes that contains all of our multimedia elements including a final video project in a special segment here.

Exploring Diversity and Inclusivity at UIUC: Behind the Numbers

Prospective students tour the Quad

In terms of diversity, the University of Illinois isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

While Illinois claims to be the “the most diverse public university in the Big Ten” on its admissions website, according to statistics found on Forbes.com, the university’s student population, while quite diverse, isn’t as varied as a prospective student would be led to believe. Continue reading

On Sunday, March 8, a video from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at the University of Oklahoma went viral in which a bus full of brothers chanted, “There will never be a n—— SAE/There will never be a n—– SAE/You can hang ‘em from a tree, but it will never start with me/There will never be a n—– SAE.”

The chapter was suspended, the two students pictured in the video expelled from the university, and a nationwide debate was sparked once again: do fraternities and sororities breed a culture of racism, or was this an isolated occurrence?

No More: You Have the Power

Produced by: Steven Bardwell

In October of 1987, domestic violence awareness month was created.  Ever since, domestic violence outlets and agencies have been emerging throughout the country, providing a place for survivors to gain control of their situations.

At the University of Illinois, the campus is coming together as a whole to provide students with the necessary outlets to escape their hostile environments.  Not only is the University providing these outlets, but it has made the pledge to stand behind the victims and respect whichever direction they decide to go.

Inclusive Illinois: Seeing Past the Disability and Looking at the Person

Inclusive Illinois

InclusiveIllinois

When the University of Illinois launched their new motto of “Inclusive Illinois,” many believed that this was brought up by the array of events that were tied with race on campus. From the racist tweets against Chancellor Phyllis Wise last year to the Salaita controversy, race has been very apparent on the campus. So when we think of “Inclusive Illinois,” we think of race, maybe even being inclusive of the LGBTQ community, or religion, but many times, we do not think of people with disabilities.

Professional Standards for Professors on Social Media

By Joey Gelman

Social Media and the First Amendment have been a combination that has brought much debate on how to properly govern works on social media. People can be fired in the private sector for a certain post on Facebook or Twitter, but that same rule may not apply to those under the umbrella of Academia.

A-Typical is the New Typical

Two U of I students and best friends, S.H. and K-Ho, pose for a picture on the Main Quad.

Students at the University of Illinois are Anything But Typical.

Marginalization is something that is present and still exists today on the University of Illinois’ campus. Students of different backgrounds are all impacted by this marginalization on a daily basis. Sometimes, these struggles do not make their school experience easy. However, these invisible issues make each person unique in their own way, and ultimately, this shapes them into what we define as an “a-typical” student.

The Accessible Experience

Illinois is often regarded as the most accessible campus in the nation. But, how exactly did we deserve this title? For our project, we explored the various levels of how and why we have repeatedly been called the most accessible university in the country, and how far we still have to go in order to really be fully accessible. We were able to speak with students with varying levels of disabilities, as well as professors, assistants, and other experts on the subject that were able to give us a lot of great information on how much further we really have to go. Throughout the different levels of our project, we hope that you can see how advanced we already are, and where we may be heading in the near future.

Check out our project here.

Be the Power

Sexual assault is a problem that has plagued our world for a long time, but we can help survivors by becoming educated in what sexual assault is and how to prevent an attack from happening.  From learning about how sexual assaults makes survivors feel from the moment it happens to their journey through recovery, we can see how survivors need to be supported every step of the way. This website should show you these steps you can take to become a better supporter for a survivor.

The Diverse Voices of UIUC

Diversity is an issue that is growing in importance to the world as a whole, and also more specifically, to college campus. Diversity, being the tricky subject that it is, is one of much debate and speculation. Across the campus at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, efforts are, and have been, ongoing that aim to increase diversity, as well as embrace the already existent diversity. What types of people are looking to increase diversity on campus, and how are they going about doing that?  Check out what we found, here.
